Why Search Volume Matters for SEO

Search volume is the foundation of keyword research. Without it, you're guessing which content to create and which pages to optimize.

The biggest SEO mistake is targeting keywords nobody searches for. You can write the best article ever written about a topic, but if nobody is searching for it, you'll get zero organic traffic.

Equally dangerous is targeting keywords that are too competitive. A keyword with 100K monthly searches sounds great, but if every result on page 1 is a domain with DR 80+, you won't rank for years.

The sweet spot is low competition + decent volume + high CPC. These are keywords where you can rank on page 1 within months and the traffic has real commercial value.

Once you find the right keywords, make sure your pages actually get indexed. Use IndexFlow to check and fix your indexing status. A page that isn't indexed can't rank for any keyword.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is keyword search volume?

Keyword search volume is the average number of times a keyword is searched per month in Google. Higher volume means more potential traffic, but also usually more competition. For example, 'SEO tools' might have 12,000 monthly searches while 'best SEO checker for small business' might have 500 — but the long-tail keyword is much easier to rank for.

Where does the search volume data come from?

Our data comes from the Google Ads API via DataForSEO, which provides the same keyword data that Google Keyword Planner shows to advertisers. This is the most accurate source of search volume data available, as it comes directly from Google.

What does keyword competition mean?

Competition level (Low, Medium, High) indicates how many advertisers are bidding on that keyword in Google Ads. Low competition keywords are often easier to rank for organically too, making them ideal targets for SEO content. However, organic competition can differ from paid competition.

What is CPC and why does it matter for SEO?

CPC (Cost Per Click) is what advertisers pay per click in Google Ads. High CPC keywords (e.g., $15+) indicate strong commercial intent — people searching these keywords are ready to buy. These are often worth targeting with SEO even if volume is lower, because each visitor is more valuable.

How many keywords can I check at once?

You can check up to 10 keywords per query. Enter one keyword per line, then click Check. Results include monthly volume, competition level, CPC, and trend direction. You can export everything to CSV.
